The Wedge building form extends dramatically both in width and height as it links toward the covered outdoor area providing shade from summer sun. It is clad in galvanised corrugated iron and its shape takes reference from the classic Australian farming vernacular.
Inside, custom-built joinery and furniture enhance the cosy ambiance, with framed views of the garden through a Corbusier-style horizontal window.
The kitchen area also provides a concealed, pull-out-folding-table drawer that can be utilised for both dining and working from home with stackable stools that can double up as coffee tables when lounging on the daybed.
Mirrored panels are installed below the kitchen joinery and behind the living room open shelving to give the illusion of greater space.
Whilst modest in floor area, The Wedge still aims to provide separation between the public and private zones by elevating the sleeping platform above its living area. This gives precious space back to the living zone and allows for a built-in daybed that can be used as a reading, working, or relaxation space.
The sleeping area is accessed by ladder, has a galvanised steel mesh platform and a stainless steel tensile mesh barrier to allow light to pass through without dominating the space.
The sleeping platform is fitted with ample clothes storage space for a couple allowing the living zone to accommodate more day-to-day storage needs.
The unique wedge shape floor plan restricts itself at the private washing area but then opens up through the public/living areas giving the space a sense of optimism and drama.
Internal plywood paneled ceilings minimise its carbon footprint.
The bathroom/washroom is lit by a circular skylight located directly above the round shower and joinery is provided both beside and under the basin concealing a washer-dryer and everyday toiletries.
There is also storage to the lower section of the living room open joinery, that is accessed from the bathroom.
